The Town of San Anselmo is joining community-based efforts to reduce youth alcohol consumption

RV Healthy Community Collaborative

Raising the Bar is a program in Marin to encourage parents, organizations, and communities to create youth-focused events that do not include the use of alcohol and other addictive substances.
The Raising the Bar initiative, which began as a grassroots movement here in San Anselmo through Ross Valley Healthy Community Collaborative, was created in response to
local statistics and research among local youth showing that teens and young people in our community have high rates of alcohol use.
Data shows our community has a significant problem with alcohol use and abuse. Healthy modeling has proven to be a protective factor and helps teach kids that you don’t have to have alcohol to have fun. What we model in terms of substance use can have a big impact on our children’s health habits.
The San Anselmo Parks & Recreation Commission recognized that alcohol promotion and sales at local recreational events exposes our children, teens and young people to an environment that promotes alcohol consumption. For this reason, the Commission decided to adopt a policy this year that only non-alcoholic beverages will be sold at the San Anselmo Country Fair Day. The Commission has partnered with Raising the Bar who will host one of the beverage booths and donate all the proceeds to the Town.
The Raising the Bar program has been adopted by Sleepy Hollow Swim Team, West Marin Little League, Twin Cities Little League, San Anselmo Baseball Association, and Ross Valley Breakers Soccer Club, who now serve only non-alcohol beverages at team parties and events. The list is growing as more and more organizations learn about this program and want to support the young people in their community.
We applaud these organizations, the coaches, and parents for being in the forefront of this initiative and for creating a positive example for our kids and our community.
Ross Valley Healthy Community Collaborative (which is part of The Coalition Connection) is committed to addressing the crisis of underage substance use and abuse in our community through evidence-based environmental prevention strategies.
