[ARCHIVED] Update to the Outdoor Shopping and Dining "On the Avenue" on Summer Weekends

bestof-anselmo

The Town of San Anselmo, in partnership with the San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce, has opened of San Anselmo Avenue to create pedestrian-only access from Tamalpais to Tunstead Avenues and from the Pine Street parking lot to Woodland Avenue on summer weekends. This project, named “On the Avenue” takes place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights through Labor Day. This project is designed to support local businesses by allowing them to expand beyond sidewalks and into the street while adhering to County Public Health Orders while allowing for better physical distancing to make outdoor dining and retail safer and easier for our businesses and community.

On the Avenue provides a great opportunity for local retailers and restaurants to expand into the street to help them emerge from this difficult time. The Town is excited to welcoming shoppers and diners back every weekend throughout the summer, with a reminder that all visitors and businesses must continue to follow County of Marin guidelines regarding physical distancing, good hygiene practices, and face coverings. For the program to succeed, it will be evaluated closely to ensure the safety of businesses and the health of the community and may cease if protocols cannot be adhered to. San Anselmo businesses interested in participating are required to complete an application.

QUICK-BUILD Project - Westbound One Way Traffic on San Anselmo Avenue

A new concept has been discussed regarding temporarily turning part of San Anselmo Avenue into a one-way street between Tunstead and San Anselmo Avenues.

Staff has applied for and received the Transportation Authority of Marin’s (TAM) Quick Build Grant and was awarded $20,000 for the pilot project. A one-way street would allow for additional space to widen sidewalks, parking will remain but will move away from the buildings creating greater opportunities for businesses to develop parklets to utilize their parking for outdoor activities. The street could also be meandered and narrowed to slow down traffic and add more bike improvements where feasible. The draft proposal in the grant is to make San Anselmo Avenue one way from Tunstead to Tamalpais in the northwest direction toward Fairfax with southeast local traffic toward Ross going one-way on Kientz to Library Place.

Staff will present updates on both the On the Avenue and the Quick Build projects at the Town Council meeting, Tuesday, July 28, 2020 starting at 7 PM. In order to attend, please use the following link:
