New District 2 member named to County Commission on Aging Wendy Nuessle hopes the Marin County Commission on Aging will help her enhance what she already experiences, “a balance in life.”
The panel, explains its newest member, is a place — like Fairfax, in which she’s lived for a decade and a half — “where people are ready to make a positive change, and I can be a part of that.”
She believes her tenure will be a “really good opportunity” to help “on the local level and have an impact on policy.”
Nuessle joins Woody Weingarten, former chair of the Quality of Life Committee in San Anselmo, where he’s lived 34 years, as a representative of District 2, which is Supervisor Katie Rice’s bailiwick. That district includes not only San Anselmo and Fairfax but Sleepy Hollow, Oak Manor, Ross, Greenbrae, Kentfield and Larkspur.
Nuessle, one of the youngest COA members, has crammed a lot into her 47 years. She’s been married for 14 and successfully worked as a medical social worker for 22 (for the Department of Public Health in San Francisco).
Although she only works part-time now, the mother of two boys (9 and 12) and stepmother of another (18) says her occupation not only “is never boring” but still excites her and is still exceptionally rewarding. She gets especially enthused when a patient learns of being cancer-free and she can aid in their return home from the hospital.
Nuessle has worked mainly with low-income people in the Tenderloin, Hunter’s Point and Mission districts, where it’s benefitted her quite a bit to be fluent in Spanish. She also teaches yoga at Glide Memorial Church in the city and expresses pride that she “can teach anyone yoga, including handicapped people in wheelchairs.”
Wendy also just finished a four-year stint with Children for Change, a service club at the Manor Elementary School in Fairfax, where she taught kids about homelessness, climate change and social consciousness.
The new commissioner earned a master’s degree in social welfare from U.C. Berkeley with a focus on gerontology. Her interest in the subject, she explains, stemmed from her high school years bonding with her physical therapist mother while her mom helped older patients.
Nuessle is one of those rare individuals who firmly believes that, most likely because of the balance she’s achieved, that “everything is so wonderful.”

Life-Saving App Debuts in Marin County Marin County, CA – A new application for mobile devices now available in Marin County is designed to provide the public with real-time fire agency incident information and to locate CPR-trained people near someone in cardiac arrest.
The free PulsePoint app, available on the App Store and Google Play, recently expanded its geographic scope so that Marin residents will have access to real-time fire incident information, and local bystanders in Marin can be alerted to administer cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if needed. When pre-selected, cardiac arrest alerts are sent to participating residents only when an emergency occurs in a public place.
PulsePoint users can preselect which types of incidents to follow or know instantly what is going on when fire engine or ambulance sirens are sounding in their neighborhood. The app is available in English, Spanish, French and Japanese.

New Organic Waste Program for 2020Starting on January 1, 2020, residents of incorporated San Anselmo can opt to receive a second or third green waste cart as part of their basic bundled service package with Marin Sanitary Service. Customers who want the third green waste cart must make the request by December 31, 2020 to be able to have the third cart as part of their basic bundled service. After that date, customers will be entitled to two green waste carts as part of the bundled service, and will be able to rent additional carts (up to 4). In summary, customers who have secured up to three (3) total green waste carts before December 31, 2020, will keep this secured level of service at no additional cost until the customer terminates service with the Marin Sanitary Service. This change is part of the new program for the collection of organic waste (food and yard waste). Beginning in 2020, Marin Sanitary will no longer collect organic waste from customer-owned cans. You will be receiving more information from MSS and the Town throughout 2020 on this program change. It is important to note that these changes are for customers in the incorporated town of San Anselmo. This does not apply to customers who may have a San Anselmo address but reside in unincorporated Marin County, such as residents of Sleepy Hollow.
