Earth Day April 22, 2020

Each year, communities across the world celebrate Earth Day to increase awareness of environmental issues. Today, the Town of San Anselmo celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day and the actions the Town has taken for a healthy planet.

San Anselmo has reduced emissions 29% since 2005. We need to reduce emissions another 15,680 MTCO2e to meet the local and State target for 2030 and another 42,660 MTCO2e to meet the State target for 2050, which is 80% below 1990 levels. View the most recent San Anselmo Greenhouse Gas progress report here.

The theme of Earth day’s 50th anniversary is "Take Action". The San Anselmo Sustainability Commission believes Earth Day is every day. This is our moment - what will you to do mark 50 years of Earth Day? Here are three actions you can take today:

1. Switch to 100% Renewable Energy

Join the 2020 Marin Countywide Campaign to double our participation in MCE Deep Green. Only 6.3% of San Anselmo MCE accounts are Deep Green. Let’s get to 20% in 2020!

Opt-up to Deep Green today You’re most likely powering your home with Light Green 60% renewable energy service. For $5 more a month for an average residential customer, you can opt up to Deep Green 100% renewable energy service, completely eliminating your electricity-based greenhouse gas emissions for your home. If you drive an EV, remember that your EV is only as clean as the electricity that powers it!

If you opted out of MCE you can still opt up to the PG&E Community Renewable Programs for your home.

2. Choose low carbon transportation

Transportation accounts for 55% of San Anselmo's emissions.

  • Switch to an electric vehicle
  • Ride your bike. Bicycle shops are considered essential business under the County Shelter in Place Order. Cesar’s Cyclery, 29 San Anselmo Avenue, can help you with your bicycle repairs or purchase. The New Wheel in Larkspur is providing free home delivery of electric bikes.

3. Reduce, reuse, recycle

San Anselmo land filled waste is now 1% above  the 2005 baseline.

Use your green bin to compost food scraps. Marin Sanitary, our waste hauler, does not sort through the materials placed in landfill carts, so it is imperative to always place all your food scraps and plant debris in the green compostable cart. Learn more about what goes in your green bin and home composting.
