Extension of Stay-Home Order is Anticipated
With the regional COVID-19 sheltering order expiring yesterday, January 8, Marin County Public Health officials are expecting the State of California to issue an indefinite extension of restrictions intended to slow the spread of the virus that has led to 115 Marin deaths. ?Due to dwindling intensive care unit (ICU) capacity at hospitals across the region, the state implemented a stay-home order for the Bay Area region, which includes Marin, on December 17 for a minimum of three weeks. The stay-home order will be lifted once the region’s ICU capacity forecast meets or exceeds 15%.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) ICU capacity projections are based on four factors: - estimated regional ICU capacity available
- measure of current community transmission
- current regional case rates
- the proportion of cases being admitted to the ICU
“As case rates increase, ICU capacity decreases, and the numbers are still moving in the wrong direction,” said Dr. Matt Willis, the County’s Public Health Officer. “The Bay Area is down to 4% ICU capacity, the lowest it’s ever been. We feel it’s best to inform our communities that the stay-home order likely will remain in place until we reverse the trend across the region. We can all do our part to reopen our community by sticking to the stay-home order and preventing new infections.”

Collaboration to Identify and Eliminate Gaps in ‘Digital Divide’The County of Marin is part of a new cross-sector effort to develop a countywide strategic plan to address local internet access and digital equity gaps. The project, called Digital Marin, will look beyond infrastructure needs and identify opportunities for data sharing, efficiencies, resiliency, and digital service improvements. The plan will outline projects and initiatives to help reach these goals: - Everyone has access to high-speed internet and knows how to use it;
- Public agencies, nonprofits, and non-governmental organizations share data, where appropriate, to better serve our communities;
- Opportunities are highlighted for more efficient, transparent, and customer-oriented cross-jurisdictional and cross-sector service delivery; and
- Marin has a resilient information network that can withstand disasters.
The collaboration is driven by an 11-member steering committee comprised of residents and leaders from government agencies, nonprofits, healthcare, education, and business sectors. The committee will oversee an inclusive process for seeking input and feedback from the community.
The community is invited to learn more at www.godigitalmarin.org and follow on Twitter @GoDigitalMarin.

Time to Prune! Here’s a fire-smart landscaping tip from U C Marin Master Gardeners. Reduce fuel load by pruning. Winter is a good time, especially for dormant or deciduous trees and shrubs. - Prune after the leaves drop and before the buds form.
- Remember the 3 D’s: dead, damaged and diseased parts should be removed.
- Prune dead and twiggy overgrown shrubs like lavender
- Remove tree branches at least 6 feet from the ground or up to 1/3 of their height
- Remove any limbs 10 feet from the chimney or roof and maintain separation between trees or groups of trees
- Avoid topping trees and shearing hedges as this causes weak and twiggy growth and more fuel for a fire.
Make your garden fire-smart by removing dead material and maintaining separation between your plants. For more information on how and why to prune and specific plant requirements visit http://marinmg.ucanr.edu/Fire-smart_Landscaping/
