County Cybersecurity Newsletter Goes Public

Cyberattacks such as ransomware against government agencies, businesses, and individuals have become as common as spam messages. Cybercriminals launch attacks to disrupt operations, obtain unauthorized access to information, and extort money for their own financial gain. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought additional challenges, with an unprecedented number of people working or attending school online from home.

At the County of Marin, its Information Services and Technology (IST) Department are sharing their notes with everyone via a monthly e-newsletter called Marin CyberSafe News. Registration is now open on the Information Security and Compliance page of the County website. Subscribe to the newsletter and stay one step ahead.

“Knowing what’s safe to click and what will cause trouble is an acquired skill,”
IST Chief Information Security Officer Jason Balderama said. “As cybersecurity issues impact everyone, the County is taking the next step to increase awareness across Marin by sharing knowledge that can help prevent malicious attacks and protect personal information. Distributing the e-newsletter is a natural progression of public service for us. We hope our residents find it helpful.”

Fire Smart Tips

February 2022 Fire-smart Tips from UC Marin Master Gardeners

February :  Trees and Shrubs - Consider spacing

  • Remove dead trees
  • Consider creating separation by increasing spacing between tree canopies while considering flat vs sloped terrain.
  • Maintain vertical clearance of at least 3X the shrub’s height between the tops of shrubs and the bottom of the tree canopy. This can be done by pruning the shrub down, or by pruning smaller, easily ignitable tree branches up, or by using both methods.
  • Plant spacing, size control and maintenance are more important than type of plant.

Covid Clinic provides a no-cost-to-patient diagnostic COVID-19 PCR test for eligible insured, uninsured, and undocumented patients. A variety of expedited tests are also available, with prices ranging from $129 for a rapid antigen test to $319 for a respiratory pathogen panel.

With the onset of the Omicron variant, test results have been significantly delayed at most testing sites. Covid Clinics recommends that clients use results@covidclinic.org for all inquiries regarding the status of their test results.
